To carry on from the August Eddie-Torial and missing a couple of them due to illness, the last 3 articles of 1999 will continue to focus on our attitudes into the new millennium. This month we will touch on a subject which is a sore point with most of us....Child Abuse. Whether we look at it from a purely sectarian view or from a religious view is immaterial here.
This article will concentrate on our interpretation of exactly what is it, or in some instances what it isn't. Suppressed by our particular styles of life and our beliefs, children in any country and under any idealogy are our only future. Whether communist or capitalist, whether Christian or Pagan, whether Canadian or Bulgarian...our children are our only heritage.
A tongue-in-cheek look at our convictions in the new millennium

Kids say the darndest things...
It is incredible to me that the Jon-Benett Ramsay case has found no justice, and if that is the tip of the iceberg I shudder to think about the thousands of kids who are not famous but are in the same canoe...A child who was made up by others to be a model..to emulate a 20 year-old, a gold-mine for the mining and milking for all she's worth, worked to the point of not being a plain old child anymore and then murdered....is more than a mind can comprehend. That she was painted up and dressed like a 25 year-old tart is one thing, (by her family for financial ends)...and paraded in front of the world to win contests and cars and large amounts of cash is in my view child abuse. This little girl never stood a chance to be a child, and if she had been allowed to grow up she would have no recollection of ever being one in the ordinary sense. To deprive a child of childhood is to rob him/her of being a person, only to be object of commercial interest. Need I even comment on young adults depicted in the Playboy/Playgirl magazines, who debase human kind by becoming just objects..nothing more.
To reduce a human being to an object of admiration having commercial ends in mind proves to me a lack of parenting, an interest in a parent's view of the world, not that of the child. If you cut a child, does it not bleed, and if you commercialize a child does it not become something that is not a child but a mere greenback to be put in the bank. To say that it is in the child's interest is an untruth, for a child must learn to make its own way, it must learn by falling down, by making mistakes, by being a little human..to teach the child to live a normal life and that its own welbeing is uppermost in its life (not that of excesses). What we need to do is to allow children to be just that and nothing more. That we push them to excel is quite within keeping of the family and its values but if the child pays for a house/car I wonder if a parent could honestly accept that it is theirs, after all, they didn't earn it. Where is the pride that is a parent's when a child is debased?
Pushing a child to the point of...
There are children who don't stand a chance in life...from personal experience I can tell now of one case...severely abused by his own family. This child would be 28 this next July, but he was destined not to make it to that age. The mid-20's is usually the most vibrant time for most guys, a time of exploration, of making ties which bind, of having a great future, of looking forward. But his history (which is public record) point to a life extremely sinister. First let me tell how he ended up during his final days...He was a junkie, tied securely to a heroin habit...and any other drug which would take him for a few brief hours out of the realization of who he really was. He ended up cruising the streets of the city (sex for money/drugs trade). He would try extortion to support his habit. He had no real friends left other than those who would share a needle. He used to say..."I just go with the flow"...which in itself is a statement of having given over...and in his case the flow took him down the sewer. As far as steering him to religion, or at least to talk to someone spiritually inclined his exact words were "I'd rather kiss satan's behind".
His father spent time in prison for sexually abusing his children, but our youngster would be in denial, absolving his father and blaming anyone else. One must understand here that family ties are strong, and not wanting to believe that one's own father is a pedophile would probably make for such an attitude. But to have a mother give up her kids to follow pederast father to be close to him while in prison, to wait until he was released makes no sense to most of us. So our youngster was put in foster homes, along with his siblings...and if he didn't like his foster home he would go to his social worker and make up a story...his point was that he wouldn't even have to go back...they would just put him in another one...hence the history of extortion. The Lord only knows the stories he told about his foster parents throughout his time as a welfare kid, but a few homes were closed down the same day (he boasted). As far as any remorse about his style of 'getting back' at authority...'authority sucks, and so do foster parents'. Pity the people who thought they were doing a good turn for someone and then found that they were being investigated for some type of abuse...but welfare kids are good at playing these games, it is the only way they can get what they want, (not what they need).
This is probably a tale of thousands of kids growing up in welfare states around the world, some 'dead-end' kids make it ok and become respected members of society while others fall through the cracks probably by use of their own free will. But we've all tried to right the wrongs that were done and in some small way perhaps we succeeded...more often than not we were kicked in the teeth for it.
Well, don't know if you agree or disagree, or just find this a bunch of bunk, feel free to respond on the

So until next month, play safe, surf wisely, and help yourself to a cookie..(make sure your dog gets one too).
