Satelite Audio
...My own cheap & dirty method...
Ever wonder what is on those snowy blank satelite transponders which never seem to carry video signals? Many of them carry digitally encrypted video, audio, data information. Some analogue signals do not appear on the tv screen because they are not video signals. One type is SCPC (Single Channel Per Carrier) audio and data.
Lots of audio on those snowy, blank transponders, it just takes the following method to detect and tune them in for some great listening. The best ones to try used to be on Satcom C5 - C-Band at 139°W Transponder 21...however these seem to have disappeared.
So try the Anik (Canadian Sats). Here is the cheap & dirty part (nothing to buy): if you have a GI Videocipher 2500 to 2700 series receiver on the back panel of you will find a 70MHz loop (looks like a jumper cable for cable TV) remove it and on the OUT plug install a short coax cable with the centre wire bare for about 6 inches.
adjust the fine tuning of the sat receiver to 0 MHz and scan any FM radio (best is the old analogue type) up or down the dial.
You should be able to receive:
Anik E2 at 107° near FM 93.9 or 94.3 MHz on Xponders 05, 11, 15, 21, several CBC Regional radio feeds for the Yukon and the Northwest Territories. Also try Anik E1 at 112° Xponder 19 at 102.5 to 103.3 MHz for the Wallmart instore music and announcement network. These should come in crystal clear for ya!
Now also try the following sats for SCPC:
G-6 Tx 1, 2, and 3: here you may have to play with the fine tuning and the polarity. There should be a hundred or so including Soldiers Radio (probably AFRTS), Nascar racing feeds, many sports games, National Public Radio (PBS) from several states, and lotsa talk shows including some I wouldn't mention due to decency regulations. Leave your FM dial at about 90 MHz and go up and down the range of the GI fine tuning +/-15.00 MHz. You'll hear lots of stations floating by.
The same goes for G6 Tx1.
Please visit CC's C-band Page for much more on Satelite reception.
