preamble This page is for general information only. For the neophyte I have broken the sections up into the different broadcasting bands, from longwave to shortwave to Ultra High Frequency. What is most useful for the scanner enthusiast is the section of frequencies between 50 and 88 MHz, 108 to 900 MHz. The shorwave DX'er will be interested in the frequencies just above the AM Broadcast band at 1700 KHz to 30 MHz. Interesting fact..the lowest shortwave frequency I have is in the 120 meter band at 2310 KHz, a regional station from Alice Springs, Australia with an output of 50 kW and the highest in the 11 meter band at 25970 KHz from Radio Nederland broadcasting to Africa with a power of 500 kW. Some of the clandestine stations or local ones will use 600 Watts or less...and theoretically it is possible under the right conditions to catch one...a rare event for even the most proficient DX'er. Above 30 MHz the propagation of the broadcasting signal is mainly line of sight. Below 108 MHz (this includes all the shortwave, AM band, CB Channels, TV channels and FM radio) the signal under certain conditions may propagate great distances. The TV (channels 2-6) and FM radio can skip on clear summer days to several hundred miles, even a thousand miles, and I have often caught TV from southern California here in central British Columbia. The higher the frequency, the shorter the wavelength, the more 'line of sight'. TV and FM are broadcast horizontally, while our scanner frequencies (police, emergency, commercial two ways) are sent out on a vertical plane. A bit of detective work may be done by looking for the following clues...whip antennas (5 feet+) on trucks or cars, 50's style police vehicle (in the movies) are for low VHF reception and should give you a clue as to the band used in your area. CB radios work in this frequency band. The short whip about 18 inches tall will be for use with the VHF-HI band, now used for two way mobiles by police and ambulances. The 2 to 4 inch antenna (or dish) will be for UHF use, and will include the cell phones and trunk frequencies now coming into vogue. If you are in the market for a scanner or any other radio receiver equipment talk to a 'radio head', or any Radio Shack person. This is the original technology which made Radio Shack a household word. The following 'band' list is in the rough...as 'broadcasting' frequencies are employed continuously from 10 Khz on up to 300 GHz, and a lot of activity falls outside the 'recognized' or allocated bands. The term 'meter' band gives a clue as to the length of the full wave as it is propagated. Theoretically it would take an antenna of 2000 meters (2 Km) to capture a 150 KHz signal. This however is impractical so they are engineered around 1/2 or 1/4 wave length, and to achieve this many of them have coils incorporated into their structure to achieve the full length. The shorter antenna used for CB is a good example, as the whip antenna needs to be about 6 feet high, but with a coil one could get away with about 2 feet or less. However the purist will always go for at least a half-wave or full-wave setup for best gain. These two formulae will give us everything we need regarding frequencies or sizes of antennae: 299792 divided by meters equals the frequency in KHz...or 299792/meters=KHz 299792 divided by the frequency in KHz equals the length in meters or 299792/KHz=meters Use the first formula to find the frequency when the size of the wave is known, the second to find the length of the antenna if the frequency is known...the second one is the most useful. Now that you found the length of the antenna needed (in meters) and according to the space you have to build it...you may use the full size, 1/2 wave or 1/4 wave. Remember the orientation, whether horizontal or vertical, and if horizonal which direction...face the antenna broadside to the direction of the signals you want to receive. If vertical in the VHF frequency range and up you will need line of sight to the transmitter. The type of antenna is a question I will leave up to you to solve..and as you are already plugged into the WWW you should search for: SWL dipole quad DX antenna radiofrequencies wavelength shortwave Hint...copy and past the bolded searchwords into your favorite search engine.

150 - 500 KHz (2000 - 600 meters) = Longwave Broadcasting This band other than am radio was the first to be used in radio's infancy. A few stations still broadcast here...check out 150 - 280 KHz for stations from Russia and Africa which may with a lot of luck be received after dark. You may find beacons/markers here as well... 385.5 KHz = WILLIAMS LAKE AIRPORT BEACON (NAV CANADA) 442.4 KHz = WILLIAMS LAKE OKANAGAN HELICOPTERS

500 - 1700 KHz(600 - 180 meters) = Medium Wave Broadcasting (am radio) Local radio stations around the world which could propagate long distances after dark. 570 KHz = CKWL Williams Lake (country radio) 640 KHz = CBC Radio1 Williams Lake (broadcasting from Kelowna) 680 KHz = CKBX 100 Mile House (country radio) 960 KHz = CKCQ Quesnel (country radio) In the days of Al Capone and the dirty thirties the police band was situated between 1600 and 1800 cps...and in some parts of Europe it is as yet used. It doesn't take much figuring to detune a radio's coil to receive these calls as any old techie will tell ya. This band was fazed out during the 50's in favor of the VHF-Lo Band (around 50 MHz), which in turn was fazed out in favor of the VHF-Hi Band (137 - 142 MHz), which is now being fazed out to take advantage of the 'trunk' systems at 900 MHz.

1800 - 2000 KHz (160 Meter Band) = Amateur Ham Radio All the amateur ham bands will be engaged in mostly mundane chit-chat. However these bands come alive as an 'emergency network' during times of disasters or wars. Where populations are scarce they become the lifeline to civilization and help, as during the infamous Alaska earthquake. These bands will have the same characteristics regarding propagation as their neigboring shortwave bands....spot on...

2300 - 2490 KHz (120 Meter Band) = Shortwave Broadcasting Between this and the next band you will find: 2680 KHz ship emergency and calling frequencies 2500 KHz WWV Ft Collins, Colorado for weather, time and equipment calibration.

3200 - 3400 KHz (90 Meter Band) = Shortwave Broadcasting Within these two bands you will find the tropical regional broadcast stations which may propagate vast distance during winter nights. Australia, Indonesia, China, Korea, Brazil, and if you are really lucky Madagascar, Swaziland, Papua, Liberia, Togo, Zimbabwe, Sierra Leone. These frequencies are not generally used in the Americas for general shortwave broadcasting. Weather bulletins and the US Coast Guard should be situated outside this band at about 2670 KHz and at around 3485 KHz you should be able to locate aviation weather frequencies. 3330 KHz CHU, Canada's time (Eastern Standard) station

3500 - 4000 KHz (80 Meter Band) = Amateur Ham Radio In the Americas this band is exclusive to hams, but in other parts of the world it is also used for broadcasting regional radio stations.

3900 - 4000 KHz (75 Meter Band) = Shortwave Broadcasting Some more tropical stations here, long-range reception is possible during winter nights, and with some luck during spring and fall nights as well. Look for some clandestine broadcasts from Asia, Iraq, Afghanistan, Kurdistan (liberation forces), Iran and Kampuchea. These 'unlawful' stations tend to move around (understandably). You will also find some major world broadcasters from Russia, the BBC and Beijing. This band is used outside the Americas for shortwave broadcasting. At about 4125 KHz ...ship to ship communications. And just above this band: 4442.5 KHz WILLIAMS LAKE NORTHERN MOUNTAIN HELICOPTERS 4491.4 KHz WILLIAMS LAKE AIRPORT OKANAGAN HELICOPTERS 4647.0 KHz WILLIAMS LAKE BC NORTHERN MOUNTAIN HELICOPTERS

4750 - 5060 KHz (60 Meter Band) = Shortwave Broadcasting Some more tropical stations here, long-range reception is possible during winter, spring and fall nights. Stations from Central and South America are common here, but some surprises as well, such as Vietnam, Nigeria, Gabon, Mali, Tanzania, India, Indonesia and Cameroon. 5000 KHz WWV Colorado or WWVH Hawaii for weather, time calibration 5191.4 KHz WILLIAMS LAKE AIRPORT OKANAGAN HELICOPTERS

5950 - 6200 KHz (49 Meter Band) = Shortwave Broadcasting This band is perhaps the best known of all the shortwave bands. This is the major regional band around the world with stations usually broadcasting to their own countries or regions. Most major world broadcasters can be found here after dark as well. Just above this band from 6205 to 6400 KHz you will come across the many European pirate stations. These stations will broadcast from a ship outside of the nation's limits or from a clandestine location in which case the station would move daily and perhaps also use another frequency. Remember Radio Veronica (Holland) situated in the North Sea? Not only did it broadcast in this band, but also on FM and was perhaps the most successful commercial pirate station. Look for stations broadcasting from just outside Ireland, Scotland, Holland, England, France and Germany. Another great place as well for clandestine stations, those of the 'freedom' fighters and of government opposition, being basically political entities. You may find the Voice of the Kurds, the Iraqi People, Iran, from inside China, Afghanistan, Central and South America, Thailand and Korea. Even a few from the good ole USA, one interesting but distasteful one is the neo-nazi station popping up here and there...Voice of To-Morrow. 6005 KHz CFCX Montreal 6030 KHz CFVP Calgary 6070 KHz CFRX Toronto 6080 KHz CKFX Vancouver 6130 KHz CHNX Halifax 6803.4 KHz WILLIAMS LAKE AIRPORT OKANAGAN HELICOPTERS

7100 - 7300 KHz (41 Meter Band) = Shortwave Broadcasting This band in part is shared by the amateur (ham 40 meter band) in the Americas. The 40 meter band in the Americas is reserved for Hams. Reception should be excellent after dark any time of year. Altho this band was reserved for amateurs it was the 'communist' bloc countries which started broadcasting here, and not being bound by any convention or agreement this band became known as the 'commie' or Soviet band. The cold war was propagated from here with lots of inflamatory rhetoric which of course demanded lots of signal jamming by the oposing viewpoint. For 50 years it was the most interesting band in the shortwave spectrum. Now that the cold war is over the subject matter consists of news and entertainment, and not so much on ideology and propaganda except of course for the religious broadcasters who consider themselves at war all the time [a bit of a rant by me personally!]. 7335 KHz CHU Canada's time station

7000 - 7300 KHz (40 Meter Band) = Amateur Ham Radio Outside of this band: 9181.4 KHz WILLIAMS LAKE AIRPORT OKANAGAN HELICOPTERS

9500 - 9900 KHz (31 Meter Band) = Shortwave Broadcasting A major band for international broadcasters. Reception should be excellent any time of day, any season. These broadcasts are aimed at international audiences. The Netherlands, Voice of America, the BBC, Radio Canada, Vatican, Russia, China, and of course many 'small time' stations as well. Also used for some domestic services. 9625 KHz CBC domestic radio for Eastern N America. Radio Canada International (RCI) is considered one of the premier world broadcasters, having been the voice of reason around the globe for nearly a century. Last year the Canadian government tried to shut it down as a fiscal fix but the backlash from the rest of the world and Canadians alike was unbearable for our politicians. No doubt they will try it again once the hoopla has died down and forgotten. As long as people keep writing in to RCI its life should be assured. Long live RCI albeit severely cut back in broadcasting times and frequencies. You will find this super-voice from the 49 to the 13 meter band. BBC, Israel, Egypt, Taiwan, RCI, VOA, Greece, Vietnam, Albania, Russia, Ukraine are just some of the major broadcasters here. There tends to be some clandestine operators here as well, from the hot areas in and about the old Yugoslavia.

10100 - 10150 KHz (30 Meter Band) = Amateur Ham Radio 10000 KHz WWV or WWVH (time/weather/calibration/propagation forecasts)

11650 - 12050 KHz (25 Meter Band) = Shortwave Broadcasting Another major band for international broadcasters. Reception should be excellent any time of day, any season. This is the same as the 31 meter band, except it doesn't appear as crowded. Just above this band... 11543.4 KHz WILLIAMS LAKE AIRPORT OKANAGAN HELICOPTERS

13600 - 13800 KHz (22 Meter Band) = Shortwave Broadcasting Not well known, but this band has some surprises. Reception should be good mainly during the daylight hours but a few stronger stations may come in after dark. Many major broadcaster here, but look for Arab Emirates, Kuwait, Iraq and Pakistan.

14000 - 14350 KHz (20 Meter Band) = Amateur Ham Radio 14670 KHz CHU Canada's time station and some just above 14350 KHz...VOA, Moscow, UN, and a most unusual station...Kiribati.

15100 - 15600 KHz (19 Meter Band) = Shortwave Broadcasting A major international band for daytime use. Some stronger stations may come in at night. 15000 KHz WWV or WWVH (time/weather/calibration/propagation forecasts) Also look for some clandestine and sneaky voices...the neo-nazi movement in the USA, pirate stations in Europe, Islamic Iran, Vatican, Syria, Israel, Morroco, Philippines, Spain, Sri Lanka, Iceland, some south and central American stations. Red-hot rhetoric can still be heard coming from N. Korea, Iraq, Cuba and Libya. Surprises if you can find them... Bangladesh, Algeria, Laos, Congo, Qatar, Mariana Islands, Saudi Arabia.

17550 - 17900 KHz (16 Meter Band) = Shortwave Broadcasting International band for daytime use. Between this band and the one previous (19 Meters) you may find clandestine stations from Kampuchea, Iran, Chad, Egypt. Also the AFRTS can be found 'out of band' here. Strictly in this band the usual well known USA, Russia, Canada, Europe, and Asia broadcasters. A few African and Middle East here as well.

18068 - 18168 KHz (16 Meter Band) = Amateur Ham Radio Just upside of this band, starting at 18175 up to 21000 some major stations are taking advantage of the wide open spaces...USA's VOA and Moscow.

21000 - 21450 KHz (15 Meter Band) = Amateur Ham Radio

21450 - 21850 KHz (13 Meter Band) = Shortwave Broadcasting International band for daytime use only. Vatican, Philippines, Belgium, Spain, Germany, BBC, Austria, Pakistan, Holland, Portugal, Saudi Arabia, Japan, China, Sweden, Italy, France plus many more. Not much if you are fishing for small fry and the unusual here.

24890 - 24990 KHz (12 Meter Band) = Amateur Ham Radio

25670 - 26100 KHz (11 Meter Band) = Shortwave Broadcasting International band for daytime use only. The high end of the shorwave spectrum ends here. The frequencies are getting too high for skip propagation which can be counted on and predicted. Some pirate activity here from Europe, in fact this band seems to be taken by Europe and the Middle East almost exclusively.

26100 MHz - 27400 KHz = VHF Lo This is the 'CB' region of the frequency spectrum. In this band you will find the truckers and others who use Citizen's Band. CB Channel 9 is reserved for emergencies and is usually monitored.

28000 - 29700 KHz (10 Meter Band) = Amateur Ham Radio

30.000 - 54.000 MHz = VHF Lo This spectrum houses portable phones (the older types), baby monitors, wireless mikes, and drive-thru restaurant frequencies. Also a smattering of commercial uses of little importance. This was also the band in the 50's which housed the police radio frequencies...notice the long whip antennas on the old cruisers in the BW movies. In Williams lake look for these: 30.840 MHz WILLIAMS LAKE MACDONALD'S DRIVETHRU 38.400 MHz WILLIAMS LAKE (CANADA) DND 44.500 MHz WILLIAMS LAKE AIR TANKER BASE (BC MINISTRY OF FORESTS)

54 - 88 MHz = TV Channels 2 - 6 There is a wee band between channels 4 and 5 which is used for remote controls.

88 - 108 MHz = FM Broadcasting Our Williams Lake, Quesnel, 100 Mile House and Prince George rock station 'the Max' lives here as well as our CBC rebroadcast station at 91.3 MHz.
